About Pretoria

Pretoria my grandmother was born in May 1900 in a small town in Lancashire England. Angelina my great grandmother had practised the craft taught to her by her mother and passed on from women generation to generation. Angelina practiced these in her everyday life. Tradition and belief was ingrained deep within and slowly became a birthright to all those who followed.

This art became a part of normal life mainly in their kitchens and as their children grew into women, brewing remedies and potions to protect, heal, and help those they loved became fundamental to life.  Keeping the passion alive by passing this information on to each other was the way the traditions and practices were kept alive.

Pretoria had five sisters so there was always a lot of activity, especially as they grew up. Love and heart spells became the remedies of choice, brewed to entice their loved ones or heal their hearts from broken dreams and ideals. The stories passed down to me were always engaging as my mother Clarice explained that her aunts would regularly get together to eat, laugh and cry at what was happening in their lives.

Pretoria was known in her community and was often asked by other mothers for herbal remedies or spells to help, heal and protect. Sadly as time progressed, the art and passion of these women was lost and this inner instinct and belief became frowned upon by the local communities and churches, forcing these gatherings and displays underground and hidden.

However for me, I was lucky to still have this time honoured tradition offered to me from my mother and I now use these wonderful spiritual gifts in my life and in turn have offered them to family, friends and clients over the years.

Reflection on these recipes made me realise that these woman were looking for inner help as they gathered together always encouraging each other to keep going and they often needed something to help them face the difficulties of life’s follies.

As a young woman I embraced this heritage and inner belief knowing and understanding the energies that were available to help me. Over time I grew to know and understand these desires to find inner help and guidance. I slowly started to see and use the powers these remedies and my intuition had to offer to help me move from one place to another, opening up and allowing new possibilities into my life. I regularly use them today.
