Business
Starting a new business brings many emotions and feelings into play. It is an exciting time full of possibility of what you can achieve. There is something indescribable about how it feels to plan, develop and open a new business - the euphoric feeing of your first sale or sight of your finished creation or goal achieved is extremely satisfying.
The one thing we often forget to do is celebrate the conception and birth of this idea into a reality. Always remember to celebrate your successes and enjoy the small moments, the people you meet and the possibilities that will open to you and your business.
No one ever starts a business and plans to fail. Sadly there will always be those who will try and bring you down by reminding you that you have established competition or don’t have enough seed money etc. You should already know about the pitfalls, so in these instances remind yourself why you have started this business and reinforce your positive attributes, what you have to offer and how you are going to succeed.
Remember the only person you have to convince about the coming success of your business is yourself and then look at it from a different point of view.
Have you heard the saying “walk the talk”. This is what I encourage you to do. Actions speak louder than words, so just get on with your plan.
Think about how people will perceive you and watch your attention to detail and your client follow through. Always know your point of difference and never loose your inner belief and hope of the success to come.
Positive affirmations help build your inner self worth and belief. I recommend these as we all know it is easier to believe the negative thoughts more than the positive ones. Your mind can easily take you on an emotional rollercoaster if you allow this, causing you to live in fear and feeling immobilised by your lack of business acumen.
Surround your self with successful business people and mentors who have these skills and you will start to learn from them. There are also great books available and I recommend you become a sponge and learn as much as possible.
If you have a business marketing, financial or legal question then ask someone who specialises in these areas before you make the decision. Making a decision armed with the right information will have a stronger impact. Remember, an informed decision has an enhanced energy outcome than one coming from guessing or fear.
There are some great ways to keep the momentum going in a business but one of the most important things is your business plan and your map plan on how to achieve this. The most critical area people tend to ignore is the map on how to achieve their goals.
If you have started your business you may have written a plan and completed a budget and cash flow. If not, you need to write a plan and I have included a step by step way to achieve this. I also recommend a business spell to focus the energy in the right direction.
If you have lost momentum you may find that it is good time to re address your plan. I have found with many business clients they complete a plan which they never read it again. They loose focus and wonder why their business is not what they intended it to be.
A determined idea story
A friend of mine told me a story about woman whose husband left her for another woman. She had three kids and no money. The government helped but it was not enough to keep her home and her life financially viable so she made some cut backs. One of these meant she could not longer afford body products so she started to make them in her laundry. She sold some to friends and then started at the markets. Her small home industry was going well and she wanted to expand and start a business so she went to the bank. The bank manager laughed and told her to keep being a stay at home mum and not to worry about business.
She finally borrowed some money and started her business which became very successful and self sufficient.
The bank manager’s belief could have reduced her dream to nothing, but she chose to find the courage and determination to keep finding a way to succeed.
Existing business
As time moves forward you start to feel a little tired and worn down as you come up against issues that need attention and resolution. Not always knowing the answers can lead you to feeling worried and very stressed. During this time you start to panic and sometimes make bad decisions that may create more work. I believe you start to doubt your abilities as you have heard all the statistics about failed businesses and start to believe you may become one.
On an energy level, this is where the fear cripples you as it can literally immobilise you and your business. You cease making decisions, react to your insecure staff or hide from clients and suppliers but the act of doing all these things is in reality what is really shutting your business down.
Failing business
In a small business you become the hat wearer of many jobs, becoming master of some and almost negligent at others. In fact if you had an employee as inefficient and negligent as you have become in certain areas of your business, you would require urgent remedial action.
So how do you address your own need areas?
When you don’t enjoy some aspect the most common thing to do is avoid it and this is what I have found that owners do in their own businesses. This area of the business starts to fail and the over flow affect starts to seep into every other area. It seems too difficult to fix and owners simply give up.
I am sure the actual fear cripples and is responsible for the closure of the business rather than the business actually becoming unfixable.
Lack of time management and productivity are two of the biggest challenges facing a business owner today.
Do time studies fill out this sheet for a month; I know you will be shocked at what time you waste.
Then once you have done this you will see more clearly what you spend a lot of time on and what you never get to.
Hire someone even part time to assist in the area you find difficult but make sure you are clear on what you want them to do or you start the same process with an employee.
Set up systems and keep refining them – often you are not sure what you need, keep it as simple as possible i.e. supplier phone lists, contacts and email. Do the post and the banking at the same time each day. Keep it simple there are also some great communication tools available but again you have to manage them too.
Run a strict diary and sometimes you will have to say no to people
Have specific times of the day, week, month or year you do specific tasks, i.e. filing, bookkeeping, and clearing and replying to emails, phoning clients back, lunch and holidays, you get the picture. You will start to feel more in control and the areas that you need help on will become blaringly obvious. Then these areas you can get some profession help with, you don’t have to do everything alone and never be afraid to ask for help the earlier the better as so many people wait till it’s too late to get the support they need and deserve and often through fear of looking stupid.
