Choices
Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner, Julie Wells looks at the 'Art of the Creator'. Learn to relax, take control of your being and make the choices that are right for you.
Everyday we are presented with choices, many of them an opportunity for us to learn and grow. They can be choices related to friends, work, shopping, social activities, financial or family matters. If we have an open heart, a positive attitude and uncluttered mind it is easy to make a good, balanced decision. If we have a negative mind and attitude, this could result in bad decisions and choices.
When we are in a negative mind set, the decisions we make will come from one of the five basic ‘Attitudes'...
Worry
Fear
Anger
Sadness
Pretense / Trying too hard
At the very core of all of these is the attitude of FEAR or False Evidence Appearing Real. Many of you will relate to this or know someone who functions at this level. Once we are in this ‘attitude' it can be difficult to see a way out of it. Becoming aware is a start and when you understand what FEAR really means, doesn't it feel different to you? Not so scary?!
So, you can see that choices made where one, or more of these ‘attitudes' are present, will have consequences and a negative effect. Most times, the impact of this will be small and only you will be involved but other times your decisions will change the direction of your life and possibly affect others. Being in a negative state will attract the same. We've all heard and read about it in "The Secret'(1). It is the ‘Law of the Universe' the basic principles of life.....Universal Laws are everywhere and apply to everyone. The most powerful one is ‘Like attracts like' so if you are living as God intended and having pure and positive thoughts then you will attract people, things and situations that resonate with that. The opposite is also true. If you behave in a manner that goes against nature and God then you will attract similar. Once you understand it you can use it to your benefit. Just be careful what you think....it IS all about the mind!
This is also true as far as our health is concerned.
Healthy Mind, Healthy Body!
The body is directly affected by the mind so before we can win our physical battles, often we must first win the mental ones. In order to work on the body, the mind must be healthy. People who have lived their lives in a negative way will have patterns that need to be worked on. A good way to change our beliefs and negative thought patterns is to recognise what they are and simply change the way we think. It's just like changing your socks! This way, we treat the body and mind as one. Addressing ‘mental' stuff and reducing emotional stress can help resolve physical problems. People get stuck in their minds and this can lead to ‘stagnation' in the form of a pain, illness or trauma in the body.

So what can help us make these changes? Jin Shin Jyutsu can!
They call Jin Shin Jyutsu .... "The secret of The Secret"! The name means ‘Art of the Creator', the essence of which is self knowledge/awareness and "To Know (Help) Myself". It is over 5,000 years old, has been widely practiced in the East and was taken to America in the early 1950's by Mary Burmeister who tutored many gifted JSJ practitioners worldwide until her passing in January 2008. Some people find the name ‘Jin Shin Jyutsu' (JSJ) strange and mystical so we can also refer to it simply as ‘acupressure'. There are different types of acupressure however and JSJ is unique!! What ever you decide to call it, it is a simple and effective tool to improve health, release all stresses and balance the systems of the body. The first tool for harmony and relaxation of the body is the Breath...the basic expression of life energy. To exhale deeply is to let go of the old dirt and grime and open ourselves up to receive the inhale, the renewed life-giving energy. How many of us shallow breathe or hold our breath when we get into a stressful situation? When we breathe, and when the body is oxygenated, it stays healthy.
The hands are our second tool. In Jin Shin Jyutsu, there are 26 points or ‘safety energy locks' (SEL's) on each side of the body along energy pathways. These SEL's act as circuit-breakers to protect us. By using the hands to hold designated points in combination we unlock and release disharmony and allow the energy to move.
As we said before, Jin Shin Jyutsu works with 6 mental attitudes and each finger relates to a different energy pathway and organ of the body. So, just by holding a finger, it is very easy for us harmonise our whole being.
- Worry - Stomach/Spleen - Thumb
- Fear - Kidney/Bladder - Index finger
- Anger/Frustration - Gallbladder/Liver - Middle finger
- Sadness/Grief - Lung/Large Intestine - Ring finger
- Trying to/Pretense - Heart/Small Intestine - Little finger
- Total Despondency - Umbilicus/Diaphragm / Center of Palm
At the simplest level, energy can be harmonized by using the breath and holding the fingers and/or toes. Finger holds, or Mudras, are very easy to do and have a calming and positive effect. Just by doing these, you can kick start healing for yourself. The most noticeable change is that when holding these points, and using the breath, we release the mind which in turn releases the attitude, relaxes the body and creates space for the ‘change' and healing to take place.
Here are some simple exercises that really work and will bring you into a state of awareness of yourself.
THE THIRTY-SIX BREATHS
Awareness and understanding of the UNLOADING (exhaling) and RECEIVING (inhaling) of the BREATH OF LIFE will help to restore balance and harmony to the whole being.
GIVE YOURSELF A HUG - Fold your arms across your chest and put your left hand under your right armpit and right hand under your left armpit. Allow your thumbs to rest above the breast area on the front of the body. By doing this you are holding both Safety Energy Locks at #26. The number means "Complete". It allows the recharging of all mental and physical functions and helps to bring about "Total Peace and Harmony".
Close your eyes, drop the shoulders and begin by counting your exhalations. EXHALE is your ‘out' breath. You will count this as your first breath. Now INHALE. The next EXHALE is ‘out' breath number two. INHALE again. EXHALE your third breath, and so on....... This can be done by counting up to 36 in one go or by counting as four groups of nine.
Allow your breathing to unfold naturally. Do not force it, only observe and count it. In time, your breathing will automatically become deeper and more rhythmic.
THE MAIN CENTRAL VERTICAL FLOW
The Main Central Vertical Flow is the source of our life energy. This pathway runs down the center of the front of the body and back up the spine. It is a Jin Shin Jyutsu® self-help process to harmonize this pathway.
Harmonizing the Main Central regularly helps you feel centered and ensures that you will have plenty of energy. Some people find it calming and use it to fall asleep, while others like to use it to clear away the cobwebs upon awakening. For optimum results make yourself comfortable, sit or lie down, and DO THIS DAILY.
MAIN CENTRAL VERTICAL FLOW:
Step 1: Place the fingers of the right hand on the top of the head (where they will remain until step 8). Place the fingers of the left hand on your forehead between your eyebrows. Hold for 2 to 5 minutes or until the pulses you feel at your fingertips synchronize with each other. This point helps to clear our mind, brain function, pituitary, memory, learning, Alzheimer’s and senility prevention, gives you energy, migraines, blood circulation.
Step 2: Now move the left fingertips to the tip of the nose. Again, hold them there for 2 to 5 minutes. This point helps all reproductive functions, regeneration of the cells in the body, menstrual difficulties, prostate, breast projects.
Step 3: Move the left hand to the ‘V’ at the base of your throat. Hold for 2 - 5 minutes. This helps thyroid projects, gives us energy and vitality, helps digestion, shoulder & neck pain,
Step 4: Move the left hand to your sternum (center of your chest between your breasts). Hold for up to 5 minutes. This is great for our immune system, thymus, autoimmune projects and viruses.
Step 5: Move your left hand to the base of your sternum (center of where your ribs start, above the stomach). Hold again. This helps adrenal projects, lack of energy, acid reflux, digestive functions.
Step 6: Move your left hand to about one inch above the belly button. Stay there for 2 to 5 minutes. Good for digestive system, large and small intestines.
Step 7: Move your left hand to the top of your pubic bone (above the genitals, center). Hold for up to 5 minutes. This helps us to stay youthful, cellular regeneration and reproductive projects.
Step 8: Keep your left hand on the pubic bone and move your right hand to your coccyx (tailbone). Hold for 2 to 5 minutes or until the pulses you feel at your fingertips synchronize with each other. To sandwich this position helps the circulatory system, PMS cramps, heavy legs, cold feet and hands.

The principles of Jin Shin Jyutsu (pronounced Jin Shin Jitsoo) are - NO judging - NO Labeling - NO Comparing. Apply it to yourself and also to how you see others. Just by actively practicing this, you will feel a huge weight lift from your shoulders.
There are NO PROBLEMS in Jin Shin Jyutsu, we call them ‘PROJECTS’. Projects can be big or small…of course a project will always seem BIG to the one who has it!
One thing I have learnt over the years, from personal experience with my own health issues and from experience of working with other people’s projects is that, whatever your health concern, you MUST address every area of your life and make changes in order for things to be resolved. If you are dealing with a big project, it is not enough just to stop eating meat, pop a few supplements and to do the occasional meditation…this is a time to re-evaluate your life and life experiences, get serious and make some positive changes.
I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with many different people. One client is working with a cancer project. Things had been improving but she was holding on to the past and expectations of others. On this visit I suggested that she ask herself why she had been given this cancer. At the next visit, she arrived in my room in an enlightened state and said “I thought that I’d been doing all the right things”….and she had but, reality presented itself when she started addressing old emotional issues tucked away from her childhood and the realization was, that her present state was related. The underlying attitude of all that was happening for her was ‘FEAR’ which was perpetuated and upheld by a combination of the other ‘attitudes’. By simply addressing this and holding her points she opened the door to forgiveness, of herself and those involved, which allowed further healing to take place.
With Jin Shin Jyutsu you have the tools to help yourself and to deal with all ‘attitudes’. As well as receive treatments, there are easy-to-learn points that anyone can do…even children. In fact, children are the best at it and they often instinctively know which points to hold. There are any number of situations that can trigger stress and illness so, to have the tools literally at your finger tips, is so empowering.
Why wait until you have a big project? “Your happiness, health and longevity lies in knowing where to put the hands on the body”. With Jin Shin Jyutsu we can have joy, awareness, and relief from all pains. It gives us strength, courage, direction, energy, release from mental bondage and much more. It is always with us, it keeps us healthy and helps us to make the best choices in our lives.
